Students against CAA: After DU and Jamia, Assam students’ organization launches statewide ‘Satyagraha’ against Citizenship Amendment Act

CAA Protest 2024: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) is staging a ‘satyagraha’ statewide against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Opposition parties, including the Congress, have joined the protests over the past two days.
AASU plans to hold the ‘satyagraha’ in all district headquarters throughout the day. Torchlight processions were conducted by the students’ union in several regions on Tuesday evening.
A delegation from AASU went to New Delhi on Tuesday to challenge the Act in the Supreme Court.Meanwhile, Assam’s opposition leader filed an application seeking a stay on the Act’s implementation.
Student and indigenous groups, along with political parties, oppose the CAA, citing violations of the 1985 Assam Accord, which calls for the deportation of those entering from Bangladesh after March 24, 1971.
Under the CAA, persecuted non-Muslim migrants from neighbouring countries are granted Indian nationality until December 31, 2014.
Trinamool Congress plans to burn copies of the Act in all district headquarters.
Despite a ‘Sarbatamak Hartal’ called by the United Opposition Forum Assam, the response was limited. Assam Police issued notices to withdraw the hartal, emphasizing peaceful protests to prevent public damage.
Security is tightened across the state with additional police deployment and increased patrolling in cities and towns.
