Teen shot dead by police blows up toilet with homemade bomb

Footage has resurfaced of the Perth teenager shot dead by police using a homemade explosive to blow up a school toilet two years earlier.

The 16-year-old, who PerthNow has chosen to call James, is shown in 2022 footage obtained by The West Australian and The Australian.

In the video, students are left screaming and laughing following the explosion inside Rossmoyne Senior High School in Perth.

The incident is reported to have taken place in late 2022 when the teenager was taking part in a deradicalisation program.

In the video, about a half dozen schoolboys watch on as the teen throws a small makeshift explosive underhand into the toilet before running off.

“Get away,” a student yells ahead of the explosion.

The blast is largely obscured by the urinal partition.

On Monday, the WA Education Department confirmed that the school explosion had been investigated by police.

The student was among a group of boys at Rossmoyne Senior whose parents attempted to refer them to WA Education Minister Tony Buti for shared radical Islamic sentiments. It is alleged that the students attempted to radicalise peers at the school.

The boy was killed by police in a Bunnings carpark after stabbing a man on Saturday evening at High Rd in Willetton. Police first tasered the teenager, but when he continued to advance on them while holding a knife, an officer shot him.

Police were called to the scene at 10.10pm, and the boy was brandishing a kitchen knife.

The stabbing victim was treated at the scene by St John Ambulance WA and transported to Royal Perth Hospital.

“Members of the WA Muslim community contacted police, also calling triple-0, just prior to the incident with their concerns,” WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch said at a press conference on Sunday.

“I do want to thank members of the Muslim community who did that because that enabled us to identify rapidly who this individual was and respond as quick as we did.”

Police have not labelled the teen’s stabbing attack as a terror incident, raising comparisons to the stabbing of Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel in Sydney. The 16-year-old accused of stabbing Bishop Emmanuel is was charged with committing a terrorist act.

In late April, WA’s police union called for anti-knife legislation to be rolled out statewide, mirroring Jack’s Law in Queensland.
