Tesla recalls new Cybertrucks over accelerator hazard

(The Hill) – Tesla is recalling some of its Cybertruck vehicles after a hazard was found with the accelerator pedal.

According to a recall notice posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the accelerator pedal pad may dislodge and cause the pedal to be trapped by the interior trim.

Tesla co-founder and CEO Elon Musk stands in front of the newly unveiled all-electric battery-powered Tesla Cybertruck at Tesla Design Center in Hawthorne, Calif., Nov. 21, 2019.

The recall notice estimated that the accelerator pedal hazard affects around 3,878 vehicles. The issue can cause “the vehicle to accelerate unintentionally, increasing the risk of a crash.”

Customers who own affected vehicles will be notified in letters expected to be sent in June. Owners can contact Tesla customer service for more information.

Tesla will replace or repair the accelerator pedal assembly on affected vehicles free of charge, according to the NHTSA.

The Hill has reached out to Tesla for comment on the recall.

The news of the recall follows a delayed launch of Tesla’s electric Cybertruck.

The company, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, announced in July that its first completed Cybertruck had “rolled off the assembly line” for distribution. The product launch came nearly two years behind schedule.

Musk unveiled the truck in late 2019, and the company said production would begin in late 2021, but Tesla said production would begin slowly and in fewer number than its other cars.

During an appearance on “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast in November, Musk said he expects Tesla will make about 200,000 trucks per year at peak production. He did not say when the company would reach peak production.
