• The recall impacts E-Pace models built between November 11, 2020, and August 31, 2022.
  • Dealers will replace the passenger airbag module with a new one.
  • Owners who have previously paid to fix the issue out of warranty will be reimbursed.

It seems like every other week a new airbag-related recall is announced and the latest has just been announced by Jaguar and impacts the E-Pace crossover. A total of 2,409 examples in the U.S. and its Federalized Territories are involved.

Unlike many other airbag recalls, this one does not involve an inflator that can rupture. Instead, Jaguar supplier IAC has discovered the passenger airbag deployment door on the dashboard has not been sufficiently weakened. This means that in a crash, the airbag may tear after being punctured by the plastic deployment door panel.

A torn airbag dramatically reduces occupant protection and increases the risk of injury. This isn’t the only safety issue posed by the Jaguar. The carmaker says that a torn airbag may also allow hot gasses to escape, potentially burning occupants.

Impacted E-Pace models were assembled for the 2021-2023 model years between November 11, 2020, and August 31, 2022. Dealers will be notified of the recall on May 2, 2024, while Jaguar will start mailing out letters to owners by June 14.

The fault requires a simple fix. All dealers will have to do is replace the passenger airbag module with a new one capable of breaking through the out-of-specification deployment door panel. The repair will be carried out free of charge and customers who have paid to repair the defect out of warranty will be reimbursed.

The British marque has already announced a handful of recalls in the U.S. this year. In March, it issued a recall for 2019 I-Pace models equipped with LG Energy Solution battery packs that can develop short circuits and trigger a thermal overload if charged beyond 85%. This means a greater risk of fire and is a recall that any impacted owners should take seriously.
