NBC announced on Wednesday that The Office is getting a new spinoff series that will take place at a “dying Midwestern newspaper.” Greg Daniels, creator of the American version of The Office, will team up with Nathan For You co-creator Michael Koman for a series that will follow the same mockumentary format.
But also notable, this yet-to-be-titled series will take place “in the same universe” as The Office, news that will surely leave fans wondering about possible cameos from former cast members of the NBC hit. So far, two lead cast members have already been announced: Domhnall Gleason (Star Wars, Ex Machina) and Sabrina Impacciatore (White Lotus).
A press release from NBC provided a synopsis of the new show, which is set to begin production in July:
The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters. The series is produced by Universal Television.
“It’s been more than ten years since the final episode of The Office aired on NBC, and the acclaimed comedy series continues to gain popularity and build new generations of fans on Peacock,” said Lisa Katz, President, NBCUniversal Entertainment, “In partnership with Universal Television and led by the creative team of Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, this new series set in the universe of Dunder Mifflin introduces a new cast of characters in a fresh setting ripe for comedic storytelling: a daily newspaper.”
The show has already been picked up for series, so expect more casting announcements in the coming days.
