The Simpsons cartoon sitcom kills off Larry the Barfly after featuring in the show for around 34 years

The classic cartoon sitcom The Simpsons has killed off one of its characters after 34 years, leaving fans shocked by the loss.

Larry the Barfly — aka Larry Dalrymple — was a regular at Moe’s bar, often seated next to his friend Sam.

The 42-year-old drunk had a spot at Moe’s since season one where he appeared in Homer’s Odyssey, dated back to January 1990.

Larry rarely spoke but would appear sporadically throughout the comedy series as a background character.

In season two during Bart Gets Hit by a Car, Larry checks out Marge Simpson and shouts, “Who’s the chick?”

Larry’s fictional life came to an end on Sunday night in the season 35 episode Cremains of the Day.

After he dies off-screen, Larry’s mother tells Homer, Moe and the rest of the bar regulars that Larry described them as his “best friends”.

The guys feel bad after realising they don’t really know anything about the guy besides his common interest in beer, and the episode follows Homer, Moe, Lenny and Carl as they go on a road trip to spread Larry’s ashes.

The friends also learn an important life lesson along the way.
