Three retro-style multiplayer Nintendo Switch games for under £1 with ‘challenging bosses’ and ‘great arena shooting’

NINTENDO’S NES days are firmly in the past – but there are still fun retro-style games on its newest Switch console if you’re looking for a dose of nostalgia.

Here are three multiplayer games for under £1 that look like they’ve been pulled from the 8-bit archives.

Outbuddies DX

Outbuddies DX, released in 2020, follows a wounded adventurer and maritime archaeologist after a shipwreck, 36,000 feet under the sea.

Set in a “sunken city of the Old Gods, located deep in the South Atlantic Ocean,” players must overcome “challenging” bosses to return home.

“Where the game really shines for me is its world design,” one player wrote in a Metacritic review.

“While the early game is rather linear it becomes a vast open experience once you reach the central HUB area.

“There’s always multiple paths to go and all are viable options to progress.

“Boss encounters were also fun and challenging, some require figuring out special mechanics within the fight.

“I died a lot playing this, but it has an instant continue feature without any throwback so I was never discouraged from trying once more.”

The PEGI 16 title is currently available for download in the Nintendo eShop for just 89p, down a whopping 94 per cent from £14.99.

However, this sweet deal is only on offer until 10 May.

Super Treasure Arena

Across six fantasy-themed maps, five playable characters and two game modes, players can team up for retro-inspired arcade action and arena shooters.

Super Treasure Arena, released in 2018, is playable with up to four pals.

Each gamer can take on the role of Warrior, Rogue, Mage, Mystic, and Ninja – each with their own special ability – to battle it out, kill monsters and snatch loot.

The PEGI 3 game is currently 89p, down 88 per cent from its original £7.99 price tag.

Although, again, this offer only lasts until 10 May.

“Unforgivable lack of exploding barrels aside, Super Treasure Arena is a fun little multiplayer game,” according to a review from The Indie Game Website on Metacritic.

“While the lack of actual online play (on the Switch, anyway), game modes, and levels is a definite problem, [Super Treasure Arena] counters its shortcomings quite a bit simply by being cheaply priced.

“For a quick old-school multiplayer fix, it’s a safe bet.”

Dungeonoid

This 2020 release reeks of nostalgia.

Dungeonoid gives players the mission to explore the dangerous underbelly of the Internal Castle, with the aim of recovering the three sacred gems and defeating the Demon Master and his henchmen.

The PEGI 3 title boasts 40 different game levels, alongside a classic RPG system with level-ups and skill building.

Dungeonoid is currently 85 per cent off in Nintendo’s eShop, where the price has plunged from £6.29 to only 94p.
