TN Rains 2023: Schools, colleges to remain closed today in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district

Tamil Nadu Floods: Due to heavy rainfall and flood-like situations in Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, schools will be closed today, December 21, 2023. However, colleges will operate normally, except for those serving as relief camps. In other Tamil Nadu districts, school closures on December 21 are uncertain, pending an official announcement.
All colleges, except those doubling as relief camps, will remain open.Parents and students can contact school administrations for inquiries. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain alert, causing waterlogging and flooding in various areas.
Tirunelveli schools were closed yesterday, with postponed exams, due to continuous rainfall. A red alert was issued for districts like Thoothukudi, Tiruvaneli, Tenskasi, and Kanyakumari. The Chennai Zonal Meteorological Center warned of heavy rain in several districts, including Dindigul, Theni, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tirupur, and Kanyakumari.
Earlier closures affected Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, and Tenkasi due to heavy rainfall. The weather forecast predicts more rain in districts like Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Dindul, Theni, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari.
Anna University postponed semester exams in certain districts, and distance education exams in Nagercoil were also delayed.
On December 6, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Thiruvallur, and Kancheepuram districts had a holiday due to cyclone Michaung. The Tamil Nadu school holiday was extended due to a cyclone on December 4 and 5.
Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, and Tenkasi have 19 emergency camps. Central government officials assessed flood damage in four southern districts, and relief efforts continue with the involvement of various agencies.
With ongoing rescue efforts, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, and Tenkasi are gradually recovering from floodwaters. Chief Minister M K Stalin reviewed progress and directed officials to expedite work. Thoothukudi Airport resumed flights, yet the power supply remains disrupted in some areas.
The Chief Secretary mentioned 10 helicopters and 323 boats involved in rescue operations, with 27 tonnes of food distributed. The Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard, along with NDRF, TNDRF, Fire and Rescue Services, and police, are aiding in relief efforts.
While affected districts show signs of normalcy, the situation is closely monitored, and the Chief Minister plans to visit Thoothukudi for further assessments.
Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, and Tenkasi, three districts grappling with the aftermath of flooding, are gradually returning to normalcy as floodwaters recede.
Passengers stranded at Srivaikuntam in Thoothukudi district arrived in Tirunelveli from Vanchi Maniyachchi via a special train. In a heartening incident, a pregnant woman rescued by a Defense chopper from heavily flooded Srivaikuntam gave birth at a state-run hospital in Madurai.
