Volkswagen details ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 GTX electric car launch timing for Australia

Volkswagen Australia will welcome its first GTX electric performance car to Australia in the first half of 2024.

The ID.4 and ID.5 electric SUVs will both debut with more powerful GTX models in their range during the second quarter of next year, Volkswagen has confirmed.

Previously, the brand was expecting to debut the ID.4 and ID.5 without more powerful GTX options, and instead add them in the months after launch.

The launch of the GTX range will help drive the share of performance (R Line, GTI, GTX, R) cars sold by Volkswagen Australia to 25 per cent in 2024.

Power in both GTX models comes from a 220kW dual-motor electric drive system, and claimed driving range in 479km from its 77kWh battery.

That power figure is not far off what’s in offer in the Tiguan R, and the 470Nm of torque the GTX models pack is up on what you get in the hottest Tiguan.

Also coming to Australia? The ID.3 GTX, an electric take on the hot hatch formula laid down by the Golf GTI.

Volkswagen has confirmed it will build the smaller GTX, but it hasn’t revealed the production version just yet.

That’ll come Down Under later in 2024, alongside the broader ID.3 range. It’s recently been updated with a more upmarket interior, headlined by new soft-touch materials and a bigger infotainment screen.

Volkswagen has previously confirmed it’ll offer simpler model ranges than is currently the case when its electric car range kicks off.

“Each model will be much simpler than today’s portfolio” Mr Szaniecki said. “That’s completely fine, it’s appreciated by our customers because the choice is much more intuitive, much simpler, and much faster.”

“Economically, it’s also justified because [customers] aren’t lost in an abundance of opportunities.”
