WesCEF’s CSBP Kwinana nitrate plant to cut carbon emissions with $32.9 million Powering the Regions grant

Carbon dioxide emissions at CSBP’s Kwinana facility will be slashed by 64,000 tonnes after a Federal Government cash injection of $32.9 million.

The funding came from the Powering the Regions fund and will be used to install tertiary abatement catalysts at Wesfarmers Chemicals, Energy and Fertilisers CSBP’s Nitric Acid Ammonium Nitrate Plants.

A further $500,000 from the State Government’s Carbon Innovation Grants program will also go towards the installation.

WesCEF managing director Ian Hansen said this was a great example of industry, State, and Commonwealth governments working together to deliver a common goal of net zero emissions.

“The first phase of our abatement journey began in 2012 and we have achieved some considerable results with over 8.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent greenhouse gas emissions abated from the older, secondary catalyst technology installed on all three of our NAAN plants,” Mr Hansen said.

“This grant will help us accelerate toward our goal of reducing nitrous oxide emissions from our NAAN plants by 98 per cent before 2028 which in turn supports our target of 30 per cent reduction in emissions by 2030 relative to our 2020 baseline.”

Climate opportunities general manager Mussaret Nagree said the installation didn’t just benefit WesCEF.

“By installing this technology we do our part to decarbonise our own operations while helping our customers in the mining and agriculture sectors decarbonise their businesses by providing them with low emissions products,” Ms Nagree said.

Resources Minister Madeleine King toured CSBP’s Kwinana plant last week to announce the funding.

Ms King said government support was important to the workforce, and CSBP that had operated in Kwinana since the 1960s.

“It’s changed as our economy has changed – so it supported agriculture – and now it supports agriculture and mining, which is the bedrock of our economy.

“This particular grant indicates how supportive the Commonwealth Government is of hard-to-abate sectors like CSBP, which we need to produce fertiliser and chemicals for mining.”
