What to watch and stream

Out with the old, in with the new.

New Year’s Day is a time for resolutions, but also recovering and relaxing from festivities on New Year’s Eve.

If you want to veg out in front of your TV, there’s plenty of specials and movies streaming.

Here’s what to watch to kick off the new year.

“M*A*S*H: The Comedy That Changed Television”

Fox is airing a two-hour special celebrating the classic sitcom, which originally aired from 1972 to 1983. It features interviews with cast members Alan Alda, Gary Burghoff, William Christopher, Jamie Farr, Mike Farrell, Wayne Rogers and Loretta Swit, and executive producers Gene Reynolds and Burt Metcalfe. There will also be new behind-the-scenes footage, stories and photos.

“When Harry Met Sally …”

The classic 1989 rom-com follows Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan), two initially reluctant friends, as their relationship changes through the years – and is filled with nice sweaters and Manhattan fall foliage. The whole thing famously culminates at a New Year’s Eve party.

Where to watch: Prime Video.

“Still Up”

This recent hidden gem of a miniseries was far too underrated, considering how charming it is. If you missed it, it’s only eight episodes, so you could binge it in a day. It follows two insomniac British friends, illustrator Lisa (Antonia Thomas, “Misfits”) and agoraphobic Danny (Craig Roberts), as they chat on the phone while having wacky late-night adventures.

“Back to the Future”

The new year is the perfect time to ponder time, the past and the future – so a “Back to the Future” marathon is fitting. The classic ’80s movies follow Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and his eccentric scientist friend Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) on various jaunts to his parents’ past, and also to the future.

Where to watch: 10 a.m. (for the first movie), 12:30 p.m. (for the second movie) and 3 p.m. (for the third movie) on TBS.

“An American In Paris”

This 1951 Oscar-winning movie musical follows Jerry Mulligan (Gene Kelly), a World War II vet who stays in Paris to become a painter and falls for Lise Bouvier (Leslie Caron). But, this gets complicated when American heiress Milo Roberts (Nina Foche) becomes interested in Jerry. A lavish New Year’s party is a big set piece.

Where to watch: MGM+, Prime Video, AppleTV+.

“The Office”

The former NBC sitcom is a hit with streaming audiences — so, chances are, you might have already planned to watch it. But in case you overlooked it, there’s a New Year’s-themed episode that you can skip to, Season 7’s “The Ultimatum.” In it, Pam (Jenna Fischer) creates a New Year’s Resolution board, so that everyone can add their resolutions. Naturally, matters dissolve into chaos, as Dwight (Rainn Wilson) goes out with Darryl (Craig Robinson) and Andy (Ed Helms) to try to meet a “loose woman,” per his resolution.

“Bridget Jones’s Diary”

This 2001 rom-com stars Renee Zellweger as a neurotic woman torn between Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) and Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) — and while their charming performances have taken over the buzz around the modern classic, you may have forgotten that the story begins and ends on New Year’s Eve.

Where to watch: Prime Video.
