Melbourne captain Max Gawn floored by doctor’s question after head knock during win over Geelong

Melbourne captain Max Gawn has admitted he couldn’t answer one of the doctor’s on-field questions after copping a head knock during the win over Geelong on Saturday night.

The superstar Demon copped a knee to the head from Geelong big man Rhys Stanley in a ruck contest late in the third term.

Gawn was slow to get up as the Cats kicked a goal from the resulting clearance. He then spent the next minute in a lengthy conversation with medical staff.

He was ultimately given the all clear to take the next centre bounce and was among his side’s best in the thrilling final term.

After the game, Gawn revealed he was initially dumbfounded by one of the doctor’s questions in the initial head injury assessment.

“He asked me some questions and gave me an absolute belter. He asked me who we played last week and I had no idea,” Gawn told Channel 7 after the match.

“It was 10 days ago. I said ‘I am not sure’ and the doctor goes ‘sh** I don’t know’.

“It ended up being Richmond. I passed the on-ground test, just had a knee in the head.”

Gawn was instrumental in the final term with one goal, three marks and nine disposals as the Dees emerged victorious by eight points.

The captain highlighted how they changed their game plan to get the win over the previously unbeaten Cats.

“With Geelong you have to beat them in the contest to get the ball,” he said.

“And the other part is they are so strong set up defensively down the line, Tom Stewart, Jack Henry, De Koning, these guys will pick you apart.

“Our history probably is going down the line … and it’s not just switch kicks every time, it’s being able to find people in the middle of the ground and I thought we did that really well.”

The victory lifts the Demons up to fourth spot with a 6-2 record, one win behind Sydney and Geelong.
